Chainrings & Sprockets

What is the difference between ProLine & Standard?

"ProLine" refers to a product line that was especially developed for competitive sports or for extremely high demands. It was designed for the narrower 11-speed chain (1/2 "x11 / 128"). Our standard product portfolio is designed for standard single speed chains (1/2 "x1/8").

Which chain should be used for the ProLine products?

You can use the ProLine products with all available 11-speed chains from Shimano, KMC or Connex.

Can I combine ProLine components with standard components?
Can I also use ProLine products with a 9- or 10-speed chain?

You shouldn't do that, because it causes higher wear and has a negative effect on the performance and smoothness of the drivetrain (increased noise development).

Why does my drive wear out so quickly?

If you should use an IZUMI Super Toughness, it is due to this chain, because this chain undergoes a special heat treatment and has a higher strength than other comparable chains. Therefore, the other components wear out faster. If you are not using the chain and other information from the FAQ area does not help, please contact our service team by sending us an email.

Why is it so difficult to clean my chainring?

The hard anodized aluminum is a microporous, corrosion-resistant protective layer. In the electrolytic oxidation process, about 50% of the oxide layer grows into the base material in a column shape, the other 50% build up outwards. If the hard anodized aluminum comes into contact with fat and oil, very high adhesive forces arise between the columnar hard anodized aluminum and the lubricant, which clog the gaps. With our ProLine Black Edition, these spaces are filled with the dye. We therefore recommend that you use fats and oils sparingly and do not touch the chainring with dirty hands if possible.

SF Hub

Why does my freewheel move with difficulty or does not move any more?

In this case, the guarantee/warranty will take effect, if a guarantee / warranty claim is not closed. Please contact us using our contact form.

How do I know the age of my hub?

With the initial versions you can read it off directly from the serial number engraved on the hub right below the logo e.g. 24/03. If you have a QR code, scan it to get all the necessary information.

Is it possible to use an 11-speed road cassette for the SF Hub freewheel?

Yes, because all Kappstein SF Hubs are tailored to the Shimano HG-EV standard.

Will my 9/10-speed cassette fit your freewheel?

Yes, your cassette fits to the freewheel by using a 1.85 mm spacer, that should usually be supplied with new cassettes.

Are there any conversion kits for the freewheel?

No, conversion kits doesn't exist yet.

Can I convert the SF Hub from quick release to thru axle or conversely?

No, unfortunately that is not possible.

Why is it not possible to convert to a different installation width?

Because our flange distances are adapted to the respective installation width and length of the freewheel body.

Where can I get spare parts for the SF Hub?

You can find everything you need in our webshop.

My sprockets cannot be released from the freewheel even though the lockring is unscrewed, what can I do?

With single sprockets it can happen that they have worked their way into the webs of the freewheel body in the movement direction. With two chain whips you can solve this well in most cases. You have to move the stuck sprocket against the moving direction, with the other whip you block the freewheel. Important: Then you should remove the protruding burr on the freewheel body with a file.

When and how do I have to service my SF Hub?

In our download area you will find all important documents that contain information about maintenance intervals and care.

Doppio CX

Which bikes is the Doppio suitable for?

In each frame with a BSA/BSC bottom bracket with an installation width of 68mm to 73mm.

Can I also install the Doppio in my old bike?

Yes, as long as the bike has a BSA/BSC bottom bracket with an installation width between 68 mm and 73 mm.

Can the Doppio be used with a belt drive?

Yes, this is possible, as long as the front sprocket has a bolt circle diameter with 4x104 mm. When selecting the sprocket, make sure that the basic transmission ratio of 2.09 is not exceeded. Also, make sure the belt tension is between 28 and 34 lbs (35-42.5Hz). Refer to the belt manufacturer's manual for more information and instructions.

Can I replace the bowden cable?

No, unfortunately that is not possible. You can only replace the entire shifter, which includes the bowden cable. You can find a replacement in our webshop.

I cut too much of the shift cable - what now?

Unfortunately, the shift cable is not interchangeable. But you can reorder a shifter including the bowden cable in our
online store. The Bowden  cable on the new shifter is replaceable.

When and how do I have to service the Doppio?

Since the maintenance of the Doppio is very complex, we are happy to take over this for you. After purchasing the Doppio, you will receive a 2-year service guarantee including an initial maintenance.

As an end customer, is it possible for me to install the Doppio by myself?

Yes, it should be possible with the help of the Doppio user manual, the required tools and a little technical understanding. Please note, that the guarantee may expire in the event of any verifiable errors during the installation process. You can find more information on warranty and guarantee in the Doppio user manual.

Why do I hear clicking noises in second gear?

Inside the Doppio there is a so-called planetary gear. In the translated gear (2nd gear) the planets rotate around the clamped sun gear. As a result, the spider/chainring turns faster than the crank or shaft. On the outer circulation of the planets there are small pawls that are required for direct gear (1st gear). As soon as the planets turn faster (2nd gear with crank turn) these pawls engage and disengage, which results in the clicking noise when driving.

Why does the Doppio stop shifting?

This could be for various reasons. As a first step, we recommend to check the position of the bowden cable and the shifting device with the help of our user manual in the
download area. If you are unsuccessful, please contact our service staffs using email.

Where can I buy the Doppio?
1st option: direct purchase
You can order the Doppio CX gearbox in our webshop. If you can't wait and would like to pre-order it, just contact us.
2nd option: indirect purchase through a dealer/workshop of your choice
Would you like to have the Doppio installed and buy it from a local dealer/workshop?

No problem, just get in touch with us, we will take care of everything else in consultation with the dealer.

Can I also use cranks from other manufacturers?

Yes, in principle almost all JIS-square cranks can be used. However, since the drive side of the Doppio is somewhat shorter due to its design, you should definitely contact us for further details at
service@kappstein.de.

What crank lengths are available?

The only cranks we have in stock are 175 mm length.

Is the Doppio available for other mounting options than JIS square?

No, this is not possible for design related reasons.
